USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage (2016)

After delivering parts for the atomic bomb that would ravage Hiroshima, the USS Indianapolis is sunk by the Imperial Japanese Army in shark-infested waters.

Led by Captain Charles McVay (Cage), the crew fights for survival despite inconceivable odds.

Like Frozen Ground, directed by David Fincher, the film is based on true events. Unlike Frozen Ground, however, it endured some pretty harsh criticisms from audiences and wasn’t as well-received.

History buffs will have a tough time ignoring historical inaccuracies, but diehard fans of Nicolas Cage movies will overlook misplaced torpedoes, equipment that didn’t exist in the 1940s, and other blunders.

Face/Off (1997)

Face/Off is an action thriller that involves an FBI agent, played by John Travolta, who decides to become a comatose criminal, played by Nicolas Cage, by literally trading faces with him. He undergoes facial transplant surgery.

He does this to learn where a bomb is by going undercover in a maximum-security prison and getting the information from Cage’s brother. When Cage’s character comes out of his coma, he decides to take Travolta’s face.

Travolta’s character ultimately takes on the persona of the crazed criminal, while Cage’s character assumes the persona of the FBI agent. While it may be difficult to keep straight at times and keep up with who’s who, it’s definitely worth a watch.

 

Leaving Las Vegas (1995)

Genre: Drama, Romance
Supporting Cast: Elisabeth Shue, Julian Sands
Rating: 8/10

Because his wife left him and took his son with her, screenwriter Ben Sanderson, played by Cage, started drinking. A lot.

He grows to be more isolated and begins troubling women in bars. When he gets fired, he decides to leave everything behind and move to Las Vegas and drink himself to death.

In Las Vegas, he meets Sera, played by Elisabeth Shue, a prostitute with some problems as well who he moves in with. A friendship and budding romance are formed.

This film is an insightful, harrowing experience about the binding forces of true romance, the power of encouragement and compassion, and the tragic effects of alcoholism. All being said, Leaving Las Vegas is worth a watch.

 

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)

Nicolas Cage begrudgingly accepts a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a billionaire super fan. When things take a wild turn, Nic is forced to become a version of some of his most iconic and beloved characters in order to extricate his wife and daughter from the fan who is a notorious drug lord.

Streaming is not quite available yet as the film will be released on April 22, 2022.
