Top Horror TV Shows Streaming on Netflix

Television streaming

Finding the best horror TV shows to binge-watch is like finding the right pair of sweats: it has to feel right. Scares should run deep, rather than feeling cheap; plots should feel creative, not cheesy and overused.

Netflix offers a growing selection of horror that, like the genre itself, can be difficult to wade through. The true standouts have risen the algorithm ranks, though. Here are some of the top horror TV shows now streaming on Netflix.

American Horror Story (2011 – Present)

9 Seasons and counting

Starring: Evan Peters; Sarah Paulson; Jessica Lange; Emma Roberts; Kathy Bates; Lily Rabe

American Horror Story was created by the co-creators of Glee. Seems like once they had enough song and dance, they moved on to horror. They have done a bang-up job the past 9 seasons, and season 10 is set to start sometime this year.

The show is set around a family that moved from Boston to LA, but little did they know they were moving into a haunted house—think less Casper, more demons. These creatures have not only been haunting past owners of the house…but also feasting on them.

This binge-worthy series is not for the faint of heart, and will give you nightmares of your own.

Locke and Key (2020-Present)

1 Season and Counting

Starring: Conner Jessup; Emilia Jones; Laysla De Oliveria; Aaron Ashmore

Locke and Key was a new Netflix original horror show that premiered early in 2020, just in time for lockdown binges.

The Locke family children, while discovering the keys to their powers, awake a demon who tries to steal their abilities.

At its core, Locke and Key is a coming-of-age story—so it’s not all demons and supernatural powers. While it may be too soon to tell, the series shows promise of becoming one for the books.

Bates Motel (2013-2017)

5 Seasons

Starring: Freddie Highmore; Vera Farmiga; Max Thierio; Olivia Cooke

This series is a prequel to Hitchcock’s great American horror movie from the 1960s, Psycho.

It follows a young Norman Bates as his psyche develops, portraying his descent into the killer portrayed in Psycho. After his father’s death, Norman’s mother purchases a seedy motel in the middle of nowhere.

Bates Motel is an addictive inside look at how intricate, complicated, and disturbing the duo’s relationship really is.

Starring: Victoria Pedretti; Oliver Jackson-Cohen; Amelia Eve; Henry Thomas; Tahirah Sharif

The Haunting of Bly Manor is a chilling mini-series about a couple of orphaned kids and their nanny, residing in the haunted Bly Manor.

This follow-up to The Haunting of Hill House also loosely follows Henry James’s 1898 novella, The Turn of the Screw.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020)

4 Seasons

Starring: Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis

This Netflix original brings back a beloved 90’s sitcom, but with a very dark twist.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a dark, adult take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. When she turns 16, Sabrina has to make the life-altering decision to either embrace her witchcraft or let it go. She chooses the former, and epic evil surely follows.

Creepy, evil, and scary all at the same time, this twist on an old favorite might just be worth ruining your childhood.

You (2019 – Present)

2 Seasons and Counting

Starring: Penn Badgley; Victoria Pedretti; Ambyr Childers

This Netflix original features Joe, a seemingly loving guy who just happens to fall in love—and obsession—very easily.

Joe is a stalker. Plain and simple. In the first season, he falls in love with a girl, stalks her, and finds his way into her life as her boyfriend. When things go awry, things get shady fast.

As the first season comes to an end, a lot of things unfold that you really don’t see happening. We are then met with a second season: a new location, a new girl, and same old creepy Joe.

This series is terrifying for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact guys like Joe actually exist.

Horror is a varied genre. While some shows start promising, they might veer into hackneyed territory midway through. Others, perhaps mercifully, display their flat characters and lackluster plots from the start, so you’ll know not to waste your time slogging into future episodes.

When you discover a true standout in the never-ending see of horror TV shows, however, its only sin…is that it will eventually end.
